Part of Care-Alive’s mission is to raise awareness of Epilepsy and SUDEP (Sudden Unexplained Death in Epilepsy).

We believe that there is too little awareness of this all too common neurological disorder, its symptoms, treatments and risks and have compiled information to give you a better understanding of Epilepsy and SUDEP and what to do if someone is having a seizure. That said, the information on our site is intended as an introduction and we’ve included links to a number of other sites that we recommend for further reading.

Quick Facts About Epilepsy:

  • Epilepsy is a neurological condition, not a disease; it is sometimes referred to as a seizure disorder
  • After migraines, epilepsy is the 2nd most common neurological condition in the world
  • Epilepsy affects 50 million people worldwide; that’s more people than were living with HIV/AIDS in 2008
  • Epilepsy can affect anyone with a brain
  • Epilepsy affects over 300,000 Canadians; that’s more than TWICE as many people in Canada with epilepsy than the number of people with cerebral palsy (55,000), muscular dystrophy (28,000), multiple sclerosis (39,000) and cystic fibrosis COMBINED
  • The mortality rate is 2 to 3 times higher among people with epilepsy than the general population
  • There is no cure for epilepsy today
