The Oscar Party Gala

Care-Alive has opted to discontinue to our Oscar Party Fundraiser (at least for 2012); unfortunately, as much as we loved it, the reality is that not everyone is as enthusiastic about the Academy Awards as we are and Caroline was, so we’ve opted to evaluate other fundraising opportunities that may have broader appeal. And if we do decide to have any sort of Oscar celebration next year, you’ll be the first to know.

You can read out our Oscar Fundraisers from 2009 to 2011 below…

A NIGHT AT THE OSCARS 2011

On Sunday, February 27th, the glamorous Hollywood-themed Malaparte Room in the TIFF Bell Lightbox was filled with equally glamorous guests who looked very much at home on the red carpet,  while raising money to support people living with epilepsy and fund research into this poorly understood neurological disorder.

In a fun, fast-moving ceremony (well, fast for the Academy Awards) it wasn’t quite a sweep for the King’s Speech, and while there were some sure bets for prize winners, there were also a few surprise winners, as well as a few surprising speeches (you know who you are Melissa Leo!). We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did and look forward to seeing you again next year!

Congratulations to our Ballot winners who all received a “Dinner & a Movie package” worth over $200. Each prize contained a restaurant gift certificate from either Sircorp, Jersey Giant, Hot House Café or Cara Foods as well as Cineplex gift certificates, miniature chocolate Oscar statues & candy for a big night out.

  • In first place was Jane Varghese, with 18 correct guesses. In addition to her dinner and a movie package, Jane also won a solid chocolate Oscar statue from The Swiss Chocolatier.
  • Jennifer Donnelly, Jeff McDonald & Patrizia Grande all tied for 2ndwith 17 correct guesses.
  • And better luck next year to our last place winner Nancy Lopresti with 4 correct guesses. Nancy was the gracious winner of what is widely regarded to be the worst movie ever made – the unintentionally hilarious “Troll 2″ & “The Best Worst Movie documentary” – which examines how Troll 2 managed to get movie-making so very, very wrong and has become a cult favorite 20 years after it was made.

Congratulations also to our door prize winners who took home DVD’s, soundtracks and screenplays from Oscar winners The King’s Speech, The Social Network, Toy Story 3, Inception, as well as nominated films The Kids Are Alright & The Town, and iTunes, HMV, Best Buy & Cara Foods Gift Certificates.

And now, a enormous thank-you to everyone who helped with the event! We know this list is long, but it takes a lot of help to arrange an event of this scale and we want to acknowledge everyone who helped to make the event successful.

Once again, very special thanks to our Gold Sponsor Odlum Brown Limited and to our Silver Sponsor Freedom International Brokerage.

A NIGHT AT THE OSCARS 2010

The 2nd Annual Care-Alive Oscar Fundraiser was held on Sunday, March 7, 2010 at Four Restaurant in downtown Toronto.

The Hurt Locker might be the big winner everyone is talking about, but unlike the actual Academy Awards ceremony, we can assure you no one left the fundraiser disappointed! Everyone in attendance had a fantastic time, enjoying their time on the red carpet, the fabulous food, the ballot competition, the movie-themed door prizes and the silent auction.

Thanks to everyone who attended and made donations, the net proceeds of the event were in excess of $25,000!

Congratulations to the Winners of the Oscar Ballot Contest – Anne Jefferson, Laura Helwig and Alan Schlar. And better luck next year to Carol Porter, who had the fewest correct guesses, but who more than made up for her lack of movie knowledge with graciousness and good humour!

First off, we’d like to thank our sponsors for making the event possible: Silver Sponsors: Odlum Brown Limited and Freedom International Brokerage and Bronze Sponsors: Jennings Capital Inc. and Options Personnel Inc.

A special thanks to our volunteers for all your help: Macie Adams, Michelle Barrett,  Irene Duma, Don Grisbrook, Hollie Hughes,  Maelle Joachim, Krystal Kynoch, Korinna Lattemore, Bridget Mair, Beth Preston, Lynn Stacey, Teresa Vanderpost and Jane Varghese.

And a big thanks to Jen and all the staff at Four Restaurant for all their hard work!

We’d also like to thank the donors of silent auction items and prizes: Arvin Meritor, Biff’s Restaurant, Cave Cellar Springs, Cineplex Queensway, David Pace, Elaine Martin, Four Restaurant, Grace Villas-Ramalhal, Hot House Café, Houston’s Steakhouse, Isabel and John Suggitt, Jersey Giant Restaurant, Kim Berman, Mike’s Seafood, Montblanc – Peggy Kingsland, Paul Sarachman, RKW WineSelection, Rosemary Teixera, Russell Minor,
Stuart and Saladino Caterers, Turtle Island Recycling, Verity Club, Vertical Restaurant, Wine Establishment – Cindy Wilkes and Zena!

A NIGHT AT THE OSCARS 2009

Held for the first time in February 2009, the Red Carpet Oscar night was a night to remember. With prizes galore, lots of yummy food and free flowing C.C. Cosmos, all 50+ plus guests had a great time.

Slumdog Millionaire was the big winner of the Oscar’s, but our big winner was Don! He did however take advantage of the “ask an expert” table so he shares part of his victory with resident Oscar expert Tannis Kynoch.

There were also prizes awarded for Oscar night Bingo, most wrong guesses on a ballot and of course the Anti-Aging Benjamin Button Spa Kits that were awarded to the best dressed male and female in attendance. Overall the night raised $3000 for the Foundation.
