SEIZURE-RESPONSE DOGS

Mable – Seizure Response Dog Graduate of May, 2011

About Seizure-Response Dogs

  • Seizure-response dogs are trained to help people with epilepsy
  • The dogs react and alert others to the seizures of their owner
  • Depending upon the recipient’s needs and living arrangements, the dog will either remain with the individual, go get a family or household member or press an emergency response button
  • The dogs also provide comfort to the individual and can bring them medication and water
  • Seizure-response dogs give their owners a feeling of independence and security; they help prevent injuries and save lives

Meet the Seizure-Response Dog Teams We’ve Sponsored

Care-Alive has sponsored 4 seizure-response dogs teams through the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides.

In November, 2010 we sponsored  Stefania & Vader and Taylor & Scooby with the proceeds of last year’s softball tournament and in May of 2011 we sponsored James & Cleo and Mable (Mable’s recipient would like to maintain her online privacy so we’ll give you updates from them anonymously).

James & Cleo

We have a 6-month update from Stefania and Vader; here are a few “highlights”…

Stefania & Vader

  • “This service dog – Vader – is a new addition to my life that has changed my life in a very positive way. There is one word to describe this silent companion and that is ‘miracle’. Because of him, I feel there is a sense of safety around me. My self-confidence has increased allowing me to lead a more independent life. That is what I love about my seizure-response service dog.
  • Thanks to the bonding between me and Vader, my service dog has demonstrated a great capacity to learn how to predict several of my seizures prior to their occurrence. After several days of intense practice and bonding sessions, he developed his ability to sense upcoming seizures, and warn me of the onset of a seizure a few minutes in advance, so that I can find a safe location to settle before the possibility of getting injured.
  • There is nothing better than saying that this is a blessed dream that has come true. Finally, I am safe, healthier, and more independent with my service-dog!”

Participate in the Foster Puppy Program

Lions Foundation of Canada receives dogs as puppies for its Dog Guide programs from its own breeding program, and from generous breeders. At eight weeks of age, puppies are placed in foster homes for approximately one year. The foster family is asked to raise the pup, socialize and teach proper house manners and basic obedience, while exposing the pup to as many different situations, experiences and people as possible.

Puppy training manuals and staff support are provided to the foster family as a guide for the proper development of the puppy.
